World Heritage Criteria

  • OUV : Outstanding Universal Value

    "Outstanding " refers to exceptional cultural and natural importance, which is important to all mankind, as it transcends the national borders of the world, transcending the boundaries of its borders. And what is universal is notonly about the historical significance of a nation or a nation, but it has a humanistic meaning. Currently, there are ten listed criteria for selection, and criteria 1 to 6 are for cultural heritage. The Committee considers a property as having OUV if the property meets one or more of the following criteria

  • Authenticity and Integrity

    1) Authenticity

    In dictionary, authenticity means ‘The source is clear, andgenuine’. Having authenticity as a cultural heritage mans it should preserveits original values of materials and techniques. For example, if a particular inheritance is constructed inthe building of the Joseon Dynasty, it should be made of the materials and techniques that are presented in the valuation criteria and the original value should bewell preserved. The conditions of authenticity can be met with the condition that the following properties earn authenticity and integrity

    -Form and Design

    -Materials and Substance

    Degree of materials replacement, degree of modification thatcomes from repair or restoration

    -Traditions, Techniques and Management System

    The social mechanisms to maintain relevant objects,change and degree of change, reasons, whether it is repaired, relevance and degree.

    -Location and Settings

    -Language and Other Forms of Intangible Heritage

    2) Integrity

    In the dictionary, integrity means ‘certain values or standards have nothing to be doubted’. It means that it is necessary to satisfythe world heritage standards through all the factors that can show the value ofa certain inheritance. To measure completeness, the following ranges ofinheritance shall be assessed

    -Need to include every component that shows Outstanding Universal Values (OUV)

    -It should be appropriate to fully represent all the characteristics and processes that convey the importance of the registration.

    -Indifference and difficulties arising from thenegative effects of development must be addressed for completeness.

    -Physical surface and critical features of the listed properties shall remain in good condition and shall be kept operable of the process of deterioration

    -All important parts of the components needed todeliver full value should be included. Throughout cultural landscape, historic villages, and other living cultural heritages, important relationships and dynamic functions should be maintained in the presence of unique characteristics.
