초록

본 연구는 영남지방에서 출토되는 3~4세기 와질소성 압형토기의 제작지 및 공간적 분포 의미를 밝히는 데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 토기의 형태 및 제작기법을 관찰하고 압형토기 출토 유적과 공반유물의 성격을 복합적으로 검토하였다. 이를 통해 압형토기의 용도 및 특징적인 부장방법을 확인하였다. 제작지 검토는 먼저 압형토기 유형분류를 통해 상대적인 순서를 확인하고 실물을 관찰하여 시간의 흐름에 따른 제작기법의 변화를 검토하였다. 유형분류는 기존의 연구를 바탕으로 하였으며 총 네 개의 유형으로 구분하였다. 각각의 편년은 다음과 같다. Ⅰ・Ⅱ유형은 3세기 중엽(1단계) Ⅲ유형은 3세기 후엽(2단계) Ⅳ유형은 3세기 말엽~4세기 초엽(3단계)으로 설정하였다. 이를 통해 압형토기는 존속기간이 짧지만 시간의 흐름에 따라 형태적 변화가 있음을 확인하였다. 그리고 이러한 형태적 변화는 제작기법과 관련이 있으며 특히 몸통과 대각의 성형방법에서 시간에 따른 변화가 뚜렷하게 확인되었다. 그렇지만 압형토기의 제작기법에서 시간적 변화가 나타나는 것과 달리 지역적 차이는 확인되지 않았다. 이 토기가 타 기종에 비해 상대적으로 표준화되지 않은 기종임을 염두에 두면 압형토기는 한 곳에서 만들어져 주변지역으로 전파되었음을 추측할 수 있다. 그리고 그 제작지는 압형토기가 가장 많이 출토되고 모든 유형이 출현하는 경주지역이라고 판단된다. 공간적 분포의 의미는 압형토기의 용도 및 부장 의미를 먼저 파악하고 이를 바탕으로 지역적 출현 의미를 검토하였다. 압형토기는 분묘 축조시 행해지는 매장의례 전용용기로 개발된 것으로 단계별로 그 용도와 부장의미가 변화하였다. 특히 대부분 두부(頭部)가 훼기된 채 출토되어 압형토기가 ‘영혼의 전달자’라는 부장 의미 외에도 복합적인 의미가 담겨있음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 훼기 현상이 경주지역에 국한된 것이 아니라 주변 지역에서도 확인되므로 압형토기는 단순히 용기만 전파된 것이 아니라 이와 관련한 제사법도 같이 전해진 것임을 알 수 있다. 그리고 그 전파의 주체는 당시 경주를 거점으로 성장하였던 사로국으로 사로국이 주변지역 國들에 대한 통제 및 영향력을 확대하는 과정에서 지역적 거점을 중심으로 분여된 것으로 파악하였다.

초록(영문)

The purpose of this study is to identify the production place and the meaning of spacial distribution of soft-paste firing duck-shaped pottery of 3rd ~ 4th century excavated in Yeongnam region. To achieve this the form and production method of the pottery were observed and the excavation site and associated artifacts of duck-shaped pottery were examined comprehensively. This led to identification of the usage and distinctive burial method of duck-shaped pottery. To study production place the relative order was verified through typology of duck-shaped pottery and the chronological change of production method was studied based on observation of the actual pottery. Typology is based on existing study results by which potteries were categorized into 4 different types. Type Ⅰ・Ⅱ(phase 1) is set to have been produced in mid 3rd century type Ⅲ(phase2) in late 3rd century and type Ⅳ(phase3) from late 3rd to early 4th century. This led to a conclusion that although duck-shaped pottery had a short duration it showed morphological changes by the lapse of time. This morphological changes regard method of production and in particular the chronological change in the shaping method of torso and mount was distinctly identified. Unlike the temporal changes shown in the production method of duck-shaped pottery however no regional change was identified. Considering this pottery was not relatively standardized compared to other potteries it could be assumed that the duck-shaped pottery was produced in one location and spread to neighboring areas. That production location is deemed to be Gyeongju area where all types of potteries are found. The meaning of spatial distribution was examined by comprehending the usage of the duck-shaped pottery and the meaning of it being buried with the corpse and then by studying the meaning of its regional appearances. Duck-shaped pottery was designed exclusively for the burial ritual of tomb construction and its usage and the meaning of burial had changed phase by phase. In particular most of the duck-shaped potteries excavated showed head destructions. indicating the these potteries contain multiple meanings other than being buried with the corpse as 'messenger of the soul'. This destruction phenomenon was found not only in Gyeongju area but also in other regions which indicates that the spread of duck-shaped pottery was not limited to the pottery itself but also included the spread of burial rituals associated with it. The main agent of the spread was 'Saro' State a state which was on the rise based in Gyeongju and it is understood that the pottery was distributed centrically to key locations of neighboring states as Saro State was expanding its influence on them.
